Journey of a Newbie Marketer - part 1

How do i Promote my Website ? Use back links or not ?

An interesting thing happened when I asked on the hub page forums, how much time hubbers spent promoting and marketing their hub pages, compared to the time they spent writing their articles.

Did they spend hours, days, weeks ? did they give each hub a good shot of promotion time, say a few days of concentrated effort, and thereafter leave it alone, allowing the back links to do their work ? or did they continue to drip feed each hub they wrote with back links forever ?

The whole question of making backlinks becomes even more complicated when I realisd there is a debate gong on as to whether backlinks even work that well any more, and if they are going to cointinue to working into the future. For good reason Google has a history of changing the Google Bot parameters every now and then and the effects sometimes radically alter the page rank landscape. Sites that are ranking well can at the dawn of of a new Google day, find themselves somewhere at the bottom of the ranking, while other sites gain some ground.

what's the beautiful Aishawaya Rai doing here ? well from a marketing point of view she's demonstrating how photos are strategically placed in articles, to draw attention ! do you buy that ? .. ha, just joshing with ya. She's there because she's beautiful. But it worked didn't it ?

But seriously i'm taking a page out of Misha's notebook. There's a girl against a red background right smack bang in the middle of his article, and i'm not sure why she's there either ?

But before we leave the beautiful Aish, here's some gossip. It's been reported that Julia Roberts once said Aish was the most beautiful woman in the world. Who am i to argue ? Now back to business ..

Two Ends of the Spectrum

But for now keeping the question to the amount of time people spend promoting their hubs, websites , and blogs, it was interesting to find out that some hubbers actually choose not to do any back linking at all, while others say that back linking and promoting of your pages is imperative if you want to earn money online sooner rather than later from your writing efforts.

So on the on the one hand there are folks who love writing, and who write for pleasure about what interests them and produce great content i the process - and there are the commercially focused folks who see it as a business. I wonder if the there is a mddle way, in the good old buddist tradition ? Most probably.

I found people answering the question from both end of the spectrum, referred to Misha's as the resident successful hub guru, who knows a lot about this sort ot thing, and recommended reading his articles. I looked up Misha up of course, to see what he had to say. Did he support the use of back links or not. Does he spend a lot of his time promoting or not, and what else does he have to say ?

Turns out Misha is a very experienced marketer from the commercially minded side of the spectrum ( nothing wrong with ) and its evident pretty quickly that he does endorse back links.

Here's my take on what Misha has to say in his first article on the subject, which he says he has written to address once and for all, the same questions he is asked every day by numerous folks.

Im writing this in the spirit of learning what successful marketers do, and later i'll make up my mind make how far I want to go down that road myself, or try for a position somewhere between the two camps. Personally nothing would please me more than to write about what interests me, for the pleasure of writing, but like a lot of folks, i have to think about earning too, so ill ultimately be seeking a middle way I imagine, but having said that, there's a lot to be gained from listening closely to successful marketers like Misha.

Misha's first point is

1. Keyword research is vital if you want to make money online from your hubs – it’s the foundation of everything you do

The basic goal of Keyword research is pretty clear I think - to see if you can find keywords with a healthy no.of searches, but not too much competition. Not easy to do, but possible.

2. Given Misha has a distinctly commercial approach, he then comes down heavily in favor of backlinks. For $5.00 a month Anglea will send you a fresh list every month of 30 high PR sites you can join and then put links in your bio. Note that he says " in your bio ". He doesn't actually say he makes comments at these sites, but i guess he does that too ?

3.He goes on to say that you can save time by automating the process somewhat, by buying and using a couple of softwares to assist in the process.

Roboform can be had for $30.00 - and SEO Link Dominator will further automate the process for you. That’s another $77.00. Hmmm. .. definitely sounds like Misha is endorsing back links. so obviously he thinks there important to promote your website.

The two key points to glean from his advice are
1. keyword research is the foundation of everything, if you want to earn well on line
2. back links .. yes ..do them ..they are important.

As noted above some people choose to do no back linking at all, so there's all points of view on this. And then there's the debate that back links don't work, or are becoming less relevant. Somehow i doubt that, and it would depend on the quality and the " relevance " of the back link too.

It would be good to get feedback, commnents and debate, if other folks would like to join in and contribute. Be good to at least understand the parameters and the choices, and then decide where one fits. I'm sure people make various choices, as already demonstrated with the back links question, and it would be fun and informative to hear about them. Differences are good.

footnote - I have no product links on this so im not making anything, not do i earn from Adsense, since after 12 days, i'm still waiting for a response from Google ?

link to Misha, but before you go don't forget to leave a comment, thanks

After writing a hub, I spend about 30 minutes putting it on stumbleupon, digg, current and a few others that do bring me some traffic. I also tweet it and put it on facebook which even brings in some. I know misha has lots of money to spend on software and such, but so far I haven't done that - probably would if I had more to work with - he rocks.

hi Elaine. Thanks for the comment and thanks for sharing.

If you come by this way again, is that it ? I mean 30 mins. and that's your marketing for ever for each hub ? Or do you revisit later and re promote ?

If that's the case, what i don't get my head around is, the more hubs you have, the more your going to have your work cut out for you, promoting every hub ? Obviously that's going to become an undo-able task very quickly. On the other hand, 30 mins per hub might not cut it ? What's your take on it ?
